Favela tours/experiences are something very new in terms of tourism. There are many tourists who find them unethical and gentrifing which create a rift among those who are local and said "outsiders". Making out of control pricing for transportation, rent and overall living costs. Creating water and electricity issues throughout the Favela. While others who think these tours are benefiting the comunidades such as bringing jobs and improvements in infrastructure or quality of life. While there is no easy nor simple answer the truth is, many of these tours fail at bringing long lasting benefits to these areas. Furthermore most of the income/money going in the favela is focused around clubs, bars and airbnbs owned by outsiders/investors. With tourism, you don't particularly see new investment from the GOV; Water, sewage and electricity usage causes further stress on the already chaotic infrastructure. Some could argue its not the responsibility of these tour agencies to be "ethical", while others asks why do they even profit off such a tour? Complicated indeed! 🤔

I can't go into detail on what all tour agencies do for these Favelas. What percentage they give back and the projects they fund. Although there are ways we can ensure said tours are truly beneficial. You can ask first what percentage goes back to the Favela, and what types of projects are being supported, this is super important. What I can do is show the work we do, projects we fund and tell you a little about our tour! ⬇️🤝

Our Favela Experience has been occurring since 2015, which is actually one of the oldest in operation here in Rio de Janeiro. We have donated over 350,000 Brazilian Real directly infused into the community of Vidigal since this date. Let me explain/show you a few of the projects we have done and currently do in Vidigal, inlcuding a dozen chemotherapy treatments for a child with leukemia. Other major projects such as children's day in the community which serves over 5,000 children. We fund a jiu-jitsu school of over 120 students, paying their competition fees, transportation and kimonos. We recently had two in Malta 🇲🇹 and send monthly, students to São Paulo and Espírito Santo. We also support an art school of about 45 children from the comunidade. These children and the artists are responsible for lots of this great art throughout the Favela of Vidigal. 🇧🇷💓 Especially along "Pedrinha/Rua 14" and the Dois Irmãos trail. 

What do you learn on a tour in the favela and what is our focus? Our objective is to ensure that you get a "No BS" tour. We take you in and throughout the community not to the "famous" bars at the top. We strive for you to get an education through connection. Meeting locals, trying to understand better the history of the favela, its people and the challenges locals face living here. You will have an excellent opportunity to converse about the favelas infrastructure, resilience and abandonment via the state. This touches on important subjects such as education, health, security and societal. 

The walking tour is 3 hours of in depth conversation about societal challenges and prejudice, resilience and favela culture, historical aspects about the favelas creation and existence. We also talk about the obvious crime and aspects of trafficking. Yes all this information in three hours, it definitely can be overwhelming. You will take a moto taxi ride up. No Vans. 

Our tour is eye opening! Its run by REAL locals, we fund projects by the residents of the community. We give back a substantial amount, over 50%. Our goal is visiting only local establishments IE bars and restaurants which rarely receive benefits from tourists/tourism due to those areas being "out of the way" or not at the top with a view.
